Remote access and VPN

Updated: 2026-08-22 Applies to: Staff Staff

Accessing SCU systems from off-campus

Some SCU systems (shared drives, internal tools, certain applications) are only accessible from the campus network. To access them from home or elsewhere, use the SCU VPN.

Setting up the VPN

  1. Download the FortiClient VPN app from the SCU software centre or your device app store.
  2. Enter the VPN server address: vpn.scu.edu.au
  3. Sign in with your SCU credentials.
  4. You are now on the SCU network.

What the VPN does

The VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and the SCU network. It protects your traffic on public Wi-Fi and lets you access systems that are not exposed to the internet.

When to use it

  • Accessing shared drives (H: drive, department shares)
  • Using internal applications
  • Working with sensitive university data on public networks
You do not need the VPN for email, OneDrive, Blackboard, or other cloud services.
